The 1859 H. Fizeau water drag experiment did not necessarily confirm relative motion of light through rushing water, rather that in one instance moving against the flow light passed through essentially a denser medium of more water molecules per nano second, slowing the light due to a slight increase in mass and thus in the index of refraction as well. It is listed here because it inspired and misled the aether drift experiment 28 years later, one of the pillars of science, and likely inspired Albert Einstein’s 1905 Special Theory of Relativity (E=mc2) through the failed 1887 experiment. Otherwise the Force Field may have been discovered earlier.
